According to the joint order issued by Yogeshwar Ram Mishra, the District Magistrate of Varanasi and Nitin Tiwari, the Senior Superintendent of Police, the administrator of social media groups such as WhatsApp and Facebook will be responsible if rumors, morphed images or any offensive data that can hurt religious sentiments or create tension is posted on the group. The order says that “There are several groups on social media which are named on newsgroups and also groups with other names which are propagating news and information which is not authentic. These are being forwarded without cross-checking,”.
The order also states that “In the event of inaction from the group admin, he or she will be considered guilty and action will be taken against the group admin,”. The administrators are also suggested to delete offensive data before they spread and provide information about such posts to the nearby police station. It is advised that social media group administrators should include only trustworthy members in their group otherwise he may get in huge trouble because FIR can also be lodged against him if any misleading information is found.
In the case of violation of these guidelines, a case under IPC(Indian penal code), Information Technology Act and cybercrime law will also be filed against that person. In addition to this, the Supreme court order and order of several high courts will be considered during initiating the step. The order also said that “While freedom of expression on social media is important, it also comes with a responsibility,”.
