Sports has gained a special kiosk in India especially Cricket which is commercialized for good and even for bad. People love to watch cricket in India and there is no harm in making this game richer. This game has somehow turned into the market space for buyers and seller. The state of Indian hockey team is not hidden from anyone in India and outside the India although it is our national game but it does not receive that importance in India which it supposed to be. We should maintain the pride of nationality in the field of sports.
It’s bitter but a true fact that one single game is overpowering all other games in India. Cricket fever always overshadows our national sports Hockey.Indians sleep eats, talk and play Cricket. Hockey is our national game and this is what being taught to us in schools and this is what our students are learning in schools but in practical vision, Cricket is which is fanatic all over. No one remembers Gagan Narang who won Gold Medal in Commonwealth Games 2010, Wrestler Sushil Kumar who won Gold Medal in FILA 2010 World Wrestling Championship, Olympic Bronze Medal winner Leander Paes (Atlana, 1996) but Harbhajan Singh’s Hat-trick, Anil Kumble’s 10 wicket haul, Virender Sehwag’s 309 and Yuvraj Singh’s 6 sixes will always be evergreen.
Children in streets used to play cricket in the streets but you will hardly get to see any children playing hockey in the streets. A budding sports kid dreams of becoming “Tendulkar” one day. Why not like “Dhyan Chand”? The answer is really weird and strange that they even do not know about these Hockey stars. Cricket is becoming an obstacle to the growth of hockey in India. Television and advertising world have promoted cricket to an extent that it is has become a Mount Everest, which is badly affecting Hockey.
Hockey is a great sport but our Hockey players are not getting proper facilities to continue their passion in the game due to lack of governmental aid provided to them at international level which is way different from Cricket. Poor sports system is pulling down the interest of people in Hockey and other sports except for Cricket. Huge crowd packs the cricket stadium when there is an India-Pakistan Cricket match but whenever there is an India-Pakistan Hockey match there is no such gathering comes to the stadium because the publicity of the cricket match is very high and no authority spends much of amount in regard to promoting Hockey.
As Cricket is not our national game but still it is celebrated as a festival in India. There was a time when India won the Hockey World Cup in 1975 and people showed a keen interest in Hockey, but not so anymore. The national sport is dying its death because of proper resources and advertising. If this will continue then there are no chances that Indian will get any medal in Olympics for years to come. Hence there is great need to reform the administration, training, infrastructure, facilities given to players of Hockey same as players of Cricket.
