High Blood Pressure (HBP) or Hypertension has been a serious health concern among people. With the rising pollution and deformed diet, people have given this condition a bath in fuel. According to stats by WHO, 1 Billion people were fell prey to hypertension in 2008 and the numbers are rising daily.

HBP or Hypertension is a condition when Blood pressure in the arteries get elevated. In short span of time it doesn’t cause much risk but, if it keeps persistent over a longer period, it may pose a threat to the life. Hypertension doesn’t show symptom apart right away and yet waiting for the symptoms to appear could cause you death.

Causes of Hypertension or high Blood Pressure (HBP): Hypertension has been separated into two different categories i.e. Primary and Secondary.
Primary Hypertension can be caused due to various factors say, environmental, genetic or any physical change in the body.
Environmental: There are wide possibility and tons of agents that can trigger HBP over time. Your eating habits, Food choices, your living style, the neighborhood you reside in etc. Eating too much-fattening food can cause obesity which in turn gives you hypertension.
Genetic: We are a mix of two people, we get our genes from them and inherit identical traits. There are chances that you may have inherited their disease too, say HBP.
Physical Change: Human body is a machine and at times, machines do break down. Any sudden change, say your kidney started malfunctioning, can result in Hypertension.
Secondary Hypertension may appear faster causing your body severe harm. There are many factors responsible for secondary HBP, it could be hyperthyroidism, kidney diseases, congenital heart abnormalities, heavy alcohol intake, sleep problems, even simple pregnancy can bring this condition.
The list gets bigger, but you know the point. Any diseases, abnormalities in body or change in condition and HBP may pop up.
Symptoms: Hypertension is a normal condition will appear like one. You can’t just think you have HBP if you have a high fever or it might be HBP only you think of it as normal fever. The symptoms can take upto a decade to appear in some people or when condition gets severe. However, you should know the signs:
–Pain at the back of your head
–Losing Consciousness Episodes
Diagnosing Hypertension: Visit your physician or nearest clinic for you Blood Pressure readings, keep a tab on it. Get Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. It is usually done for 12-24 hours and a definite catcher.
If in 3 or more tests persistent high blood pressure was found ask for further tests to check for Hypertension such as urine test, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Cholesterol Screening and Ultrasound imaging of Kidneys.
There’s no definitive treatment for HBP, however, slight changes in your living style will do the trick. Keep salt consumption in check, avoid alcohol or only minimal consumption, less fatty food and more fruity stuff.
If the condition remains unchanged or if HBP stays, the doctor might prescribe some pills i.e. Beta and Alpha blockers, ACE inhibitor, calcium channel blockers etc.
Since life is uncertain and unfair you never know when you pick up so the best way is to prevent HBP from your end. Eat healthy, live healthy and keep your environment healthy. Excercise regularly, increase lean protein (Fish) intakes, stay away from stress and if in stress, meditate. In the end being healthy was this easy.
