Since birth, fear is fitted into our brains and you learn that things you fear are dreadful and you should run away from it. Isn’t it what we start doing all our life, fear this fear that, don’t, stop, cautions! Well, about time we learn to embrace this terrifying feeling we get in our guts. Fear isn’t always bad, it has more good to us than bad and probably those goods were the reason humans survived stone age. Without any further adieu, let us dive in why being scared of something is good.
Before we proceed further let us define what fear is: It is an emotion caused by certain circumstance due to a threat or danger.
Starting off with the utmost importance of this emotion. It makes sure you stay alive and well. Fear is the ultimate survival tool, not only it coerce you to analyze the risk but also the consequences if gone wrong and it makes sense. Just imagine what would happen to us humans if we went on recklessly doing things including jumping off the cliff to prove you can’t fly. Isn’t it obvious that people grow some care when they fear, they don’t drive fast when snow falls or rains. People don’t walk into their gloomy neighborhood because it’s not safe. You run when you see a stray dog coming at you. This survival instinct keeps us at bay and avoids us making foolish decisions. Anyway, it’s not smart to deal with a Rhino alone.
Where there is fear there is courage too. There cannot be courage without fear and if anyone questions that claim can argue with us. Many people who were afraid to do what they eventually did not because they just feared but they had the courage to overcome that frightening emotion. It is like learning to ride a motorcycle for the first time, you try and when you stumble you get terrified. Now you cover hundreds of kilometers on a daily basis just because you could collect all the strength and overpower your fear.
It brings you up and builds your confidence. You heard that correct! Every single time you choose to do something that had been making you nervous or anxious makes you strong. Let us put it by a common example, in school, the teacher asked so many questions and probably most of the time you knew the answer just couldn’t speak up because of the embarrassment you might have to go through if it turned out to be wrong. Some random student tells the answer and to your surprise, it was correct. All this time you had the right answer with but that fear was keeping you from speaking up so, when you speak up for the first time, it builds your confidence empowering you to answer the next time also. The on and on process eventually ends up with you fully confident and conquering the odds. Isn’t it great?
Fear is key to success. It is as true as anything and it has its significance. When you fear failure, you try to improvise, you look for ways to get you to success. Risk is universal, while some fear and stays put others want to cross that shaky bridge to their goals. Before exam, there’s a certain fear in every student what if they failed instead of what they have learned and to avoid that outcome, they revise again and again. It is common in human beings, we get anxious whenever we start something new, may it be school, first job or first date and as a wise man once said, ‘Beyond the wall of fear lies oceans of success.’ Fear and success both walk hand in hand.
Until here, it was all how fear can be good and in fact, you knew half of them already but, utilizing fear for your own good isn’t easy as bread and butter. It’s a challenge for those who deem to be great without to have give up on fear. Read further to know how to embrace fear i.e. your worst enemy and use it for the benefit.
Accept it as it is a part of you and its presence is indispensable. Look at how far have you come, you must have gone through a lot of difficulties and here you stand firm. Ask yourself would you be here if you had not done what you did because of fear? This emotion brings out the best in you and no matter what it will never go away. You must have accepted fear in your past, recall it and do it again. No doubt it’s easy said than done and old habits die hard yet it still got to die. Try whatever you are planning, the worst might come and you might fail but at least you would have tried and there won’t be any regrets in future.
Overlook results and focus on the process. Many people are concerned with the end results before even they start and it tends to make them conscious or in other terms, scare. Instead, put your ‘will’ into the process and let the end pan out for itself. If one gets too worried about the consequences in beginning how’d they do it better already? The worrying part comes later when the plan you were following all along did not turn out as you had expected so, you don’t sit and cry or tremble in fear, you improvise for good. Set your mind on working it out rather than sitting and be afraid.
Find the source of your fear. Pin them down, may it be some project you are given at the office or school or an idea that may work well, however, you are not sure of it. Once you pin point the cause you can go about finding a solution for it. A doctor can’t cure if he does not know the problem. Every successful person you know today (not personally, of course) has worked their way up. They wouldn’t be here for what they did if they hadn’t done it and its all because they acted. Mind you, they acted on fear not disemboweled it. Hence, if you find fear bothering you, just take your time and explore the genesis from where it’s coming, this way you’ll find what exactly to do and how. On a more positive note, fear but, don’t let fear paralyze you.
Make up your mind as it is the most important task for you to embrace the fear. You yourself and fear better than anyone and only you know the things scaring you. Make a list and start developing your mind in order to embrace those fears. Just like exercising with the body to be strong physically, it is working out with your brain to do the same only mentally. Eventually, you’ll get used to taking actions regardless whats frightening you, you’ll start believing yourself and whatever you choose to do and you’ll begin doing well in every field of life for instance relationships with your family, friends dear one or colleague. All it takes is a positive approach.
For a strong emotion like fear, being fearless would be an insult to the sole instinct that has been keeping this world intact if not tearing it apart. Better mould it in our favor than to discard it completely with bravery tag on your forehead as there cannot be true courage without fear.
