June 14 is observed as World Blood Donor Day across the globe. The day is to remind those unsung heroes who save millions of lives each year donating their blood for the good cause. It is not given much significance hence, the people lack awareness living with an unnecessary fear of what might happen. Every once in a while you think of being a superhero from your favorite television series or comic based movie, it is time you be a hero in real life.
Save up to 3 lives: A pint of blood can save 3 lives depending on the what a body needs specifically. Blood is a compound mixture of red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. A person may require any one of three components. So every year if donate blood 4 times, you are saving a dozen lives. Now that is something to be proud of.
It’s safe to donate: Blood donation is completely safe and one should not be worrying about it. Many people still reside in a myth that the process of donation might contract them to HIV or any other deadly diseases. It is not true at all. The extraction is carried out by professionals and in a responsible manner using sterile needles. Some people fear that if they donated blood, their body will face a shortage of it and might fall ill. This is another complete nuisance spread across the globe. The human body has plenty of blood and only 400-500 ml is taken during the process. The plasma in the blood gets replenished in knick of time, however, the complete recovery takes merely 7-10 days. The effect is hardly seen.
After every 50-60 days, a human body is ready to give some more blood and the process is never ending, you only need an intention to do a good deed. Although not every person is capable of donating but those who carry 12.5 g/dL Haemoglobin level. It is also true that more women are prone to anemia which have resulted in less donation from the female side. About 10 percent out of 100 percent donated blood comes from women. At the present, the world is facing serious blood shortage, as it cannot be manufactured the requirement is totally dependent on donation and such shortage can only be met through voluntarily gifting your blood.
