Director Ketan Mehta has sent a legal notice to Kangana Ranaut for ‘hijacking’ Rani Lakshmibai, he said this is his most ambitious project. As per Mehta, he approached Kangana to portray the role of Jhansi ki Rani-Rani Lakshmibai in his film in the year 2015. Evidently, Kangana readily said that and committed publicity to do the project with him. But afterward, she declared another movie named as “Manikarnika – the Queen of Jhansi” with another director and producer.

Mehta explained, “I had approached her in June 2015 regarding this project and she had readily agreed to do it and enough statements have been made by her showing the commitment about the project,” he further added, “We also shared the script, certain research material and a lot of discussions had happened. After this, suddenly we hear that she is doing a project with some other producer. I find this completely unethical.”

Ketan Mehta said, “My legal notice says how we have worked on the project for two years and how all of a sudden everything happened. We have asked for the film (Manikarnika) to stop as we plan to go ahead with our project (Ketan’s film).” When media asked Mehta to confirm about the legal notice he said, “Yes it is true. We have sent a notice to Kangana as I think there is an attempt of hijacking a film.”

While talking to media Ketan said, “This is regarding my project called Rani of Jhansi: The Warrior Queen and her (Kangana’s) attempt and the producer Kamal Jain at hijacking the project. Since 2015, I was in contact with Kangana for the project. I was sharing research material and several drafts of the script with Kangana and she was actively participating.”  When reporters asked director Ketan Mehta.

Mehta further added, “Kangana introduced me to Mr. Kamal Jain. We had an international producer and we were looking for an Indian co-producer. We had meetings with Mr. Kamal where Kangana was also involved and we shared all the information. And then, suddenly, we hear about this project. It is completely unethical. And this was after we shared access to all our research material from past ten years,” He added, “This is for the legal lawyer to work it out. We have put 10 years of our life in this project as it’s a great project for the world, not just India,” he said.

When did media ask director Mehta, if Ketan and Kangana had a dispute in the month of March because the director wanted to make a movie in the English language, to this Mehta said, “No! This was a fabricated piece of news. The film was supposed to be bilingual – English and Hindi. We believed it is a story that needs to be told not just in India, but abroad as well. Rani of Jhansi is one of the fascinating characters of human history.”

When asked if Bollywood Queen Kangana has replied to the legal notice yet, Mehta said, “She is yet to respond to it.” He confirmed that he has not got any respond from the actress and even not from the producer of the Manikarnika. Apart from this, Ketan Mehta is the director of a number of internationally admired movies, such as Manjhi- The Mountain Man, Maya Memsaab, Mirch Masala, and Sardar (the film is in the life of Sardar Patel).
