Recently, Sonu Nigam’s comment on Azaan has put him into trouble, the prominent singer Sonu tweeted about the sound of Azaan (the Muslim prayer) from a mosque in his neighborhood woke him up early every morning and he feels displeasure. On Sunday, Sonu tweeted, “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India.” And for this reason, a Kolkata-based cleric made a declaration in which he announced a reward of a big amount i.e. Rs. 10 Lakh to anyone who shaves off Sonu’s head and also garlands the singer with old shoes.

On Tuesday, Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi said, “If anyone can shave his hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country, I shall personally reward that person with Rs.10 Lakh.” Quaderi, the vice-president of West Bengal United Minority Council further added,  “If we all become so intolerant of each other’s religions, we will soon have a bunch of atheists in our country. People like Nigam should be driven out of the country.”

Shabbir Ali, the general secretary of the West Bengal United Minority Council was also commented about Sonu and took a dig at the Bollywood singer and said that more than the sound of namaz, people are disturbed by the “cacophony from his music studio and during his concerts.” On Wednesday, Sonu reacted to Quaderi’s statement and tweets in a series saying, “So this is not religious Gundagardi” and that he will get his hair shaved.

What Sonu did in the response of Muslim cleric announcement was somehow shocking. Now, you must be wondering what he has done actually?? Surprisingly, Sonu shaved his head off and also asked Maluvi to be ready with Rs.10 Lakh. He said “Today at 2 pm Aalim will come to my place and shave my head. Keep your 10 lakhs ready Maulavi … And Press is welcome to participate at 2 pm.”

It is pertinent to note that Noor-ur-Rehman Barkati who is also called as “Fatwa Imam” of Kolkata’s Tipu Sultan Mosque said, “I had a word with Quaderi, and he clarified to me that it was his opinion to counter that of Sonu Nigam. If the singer can have his freedom of expression, so can anybody else,” He also added, “If Nigam is disturbed by the sound of namaz and that of a temple and church bells, he should shift his house to a spot where none of these reach him.”

In addition to the above on Wednesday, Barkati talked about the litigation in Calcutta high court in the 1990s in which a person wanted to include the sound of Azaan in the list of noises but the court turned down his plea. “Former chief minister Siddhartha Shankar Ray fought the petition and the court turned down the plea.”

As matter of fact, Nigam clarified his statement on Azaan and said he not against Muslims, “It’s not an agitation, not a challenge that I am throwing someone’s way. I am shaving my head just to show that the person cutting my hair is a Muslim. It’s all about interpreting things the right way. I exhort the media to present it like that and not in a confrontational way.”

As per Sonu Nigam, he just raised a social topic and not a religious issue and added, “What is happening to the country? Anyone can lynch anyone or anyone can issue a fatwa. I’m not talking about any single religion, also wrote about temples and gurudwara which no one seemed to notice.” Further, he said, “I am a secular person. It was not about Azaan, it was about the loudspeaker. Using a speaker is gundagardi for me.”

It is evident to note that Sonu’s closes his lines by quoting Yesterday’s remark made by Ahmed Patel’s a Congress leader’s, “Azaan zaruri hai, loudspeaker nahi” (Azaan is important, not loudspeakers). “I did not target any specific religion. I spoke against the use of loudspeakers and everyone has a right to his opinion”. He also apologized to those who took his thought otherwise.
